10 British TV Dramas You Need To Be Watching

7. Doctor Foster

Infidelity is hardly an original subject when it comes to television drama, but Doctor Foster handles it in a completely different way. Following the story of General Practitioner Gemma Foster, the BAFTA-winning series is not about whether Gemma’s husband is having an affair, but rather the fact that she suspects it.

Gemma pulls out all the stops to find out whether Simon is cheating on her, but many of her tactics prove unsuccessful. As you’d expect from such a series, nothing is straightforward, and Gemma struggles to cope. Mike Bartlett’s excellent script highlights how ordinary people can resort to extraordinary measures when out of their comfort zone. Things become twisted and unpredictable as Gemma unravels the truth, and an award-winning performance from Suranne Jones makes this one every bit as compelling as it sounds.

As of 2018, there have been two seasons of Doctor Foster and it appears that creator Mike Bartlett is open to continuing Gemma’s story, so we could be heading back for a third outing soon.
