9. David Fury Is The Puppeteer

Episode: Smile Time (Angel, Season 5) The fifth season Angel episode "Smile Time" was notable for a couple of reasons: primarily because it featured puppets, and Angel himself being turned into a puppet. Puppeteers from The Jim Henson company took part (Joss Whedon is the son of a writer for the Muppets), but all that was pretty obvious (except maybe actual Henson employees being involved, because the puppets on the show weren't officially muppets, nor would they want to associate their kids show with the evil puppets in Smile Time). Less obvious, if you weren't familiar with Mutant Enemy, was who played Gregor Framkin, the Smile Time Puppeteer: David Fury, a producer and writer on Angel. In a devious twist, the evil puppets of Smile Time (a children's show that drains the life out of its young viewers) have turned Framkin into a human puppet in a rather... grotesque way. It's probably one of the most ingenious episodes of genre television ever produced, and often overlooked.
