When Buffy The Vampire Slayer's original network, The WB, chose not to renew it, the season five finale was written as a possible series finale. While the series was soon picked up by a new network, the existing finale remained in place, however, this required a few creative moves by the writing staff moving forward.

Why? Well, Buffy The Vampire Slayer season five ends in the titular character's death, when she dives into a mystical portal to save the life of her sister, Dawn.

Season Six began with the Scooby Gang searching for a way to reverse Buffy's death, and although they were successful, the aftermath was unexpectedly difficult.

Buffy struggles to step into adult life while still recovering from what she's been through, and character dynamics have changed in her absence, with Willow stepping up as the gang's new leader. While season six itself is polarising among fans, Buffy's death, revival, and the changes these events brought came at just the right time to carry the series through to its conclusion.
