10 Buffy The Vampire Slayer Moments That Shocked Us All

1. The Bathroom - Seeing Red (Season 6, Episode 19)

Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Mutant Enemy

We're once again staring into the abyss with the much reviled Seeing Red, only this time the darkness hits a little too close to home.

After a surprisingly exhausting battle against The Trio, a weakened Buffy seeks to soak her muscles in the bath to speed up her recovery, only to be confronted by Spike.

The scene starts out tense enough, with Spike's menacing declarations of love growing more intense as Buffy tries to brush him off as being ridiculous. Although things soon turn ugly when Spike begins to force himself onto Buffy, who in her weakened state struggles to keep him at bay. She eventually manages to throw him off her, but for what feels like an eternity, we're faced with the very grim reality of sexual assault.

It's difficult to watch for so many reasons and it's easy to understand why so many fans are vehemently against season six, as it really did push the envelope in terms of what was acceptable in a show of Buffy's ilk. It's certainly in keeping with the season's morbid fixation on the horrors of the real world ,but for many, it was a step too far into unpleasantness and tarnished the show forever.
