10 Cancelled Sci-Fi/Fantasy Series That Deserved Better
8. Sleepy Hollow
A fantasy series about a modern detective in Sleepy Hollow, New York, partnering with a man who woke up from a centuries-long slumber Rip Van Winkle style, Sleepy Hollow was - similar to shows like Grimm and Supernatural - partly monster (or mysterious magical crime) of the week with an overarching plot and major villains, partly buddy cop odd couple shenanigans between the modern Detective Abbie Mills and her revolution-era partner, Ichabod Crane.
With witches and the occult, biblical references and other intriguing mythologies, and even some childhood traumas involving Abbie and her sister, this show was able to tackle some darker themes without feeling too horrific, and the dynamic between characters was fun yet genuine in a way few shows could manage in the same genre.
Part of the reason this show started dying out even before its cancellation was the killing off of one of its two leads - Abbie Mills - who was as important to the story as its fantastical revolutionary. Treating her like she was expendable was the death knell for this series, which was doing so well with its premise and its balance between old and new.
As with the show itself, Abbie deserved better.
