10 Categoric Reasons Why Doctor Who Is The Best Show Ever
9. A Children's Show Made For Adults
This categorization has always been subject to debate, but when you think about it, it's a very honest way of describing Doctor Who. This isn't just a case of stoners watching Teletubbies either. This an unanimously praised sci-fi show. To think that it became that after being created as an educational series for kids really means more than a lot. In the 60s, censors were much more permissive with what could be and not be shown in a children's programme. Somehow, Doctor Who never really toned down, despite TV rules becoming more rigorous and Mary Whitehouse's protests. Today, sexuality has become present in the show, but on the other hand, there's a small chance you'll ever see as much blood in NuWho as you could have seen during Philip Hinchcliffe's tenure as showrunner. The fact remains that Doctor Who will always be a family show. For adults it's not surprising, because they usually have weird tastes anyway, but the kids will always love it because it never really condescends. Unlike a lot of children's programmes that will be obviously dumbed down, Doctor Who speaks to children in the way most adults are afraid to even try. Those who are appalled by the show's honesty when discussing subjects such as violence, sexuality and death should understand once and for all that children are smart and should be treated as such. The real world will always be there and it's not going to get better just because someone thinks a child is too young to learn about morals. Amen to that.
Adrian Serban lives in Bucharest, Romania where he has studied screenwriting and film criticism. But it's not all about artsy European dramas for him, as he's also a fan of horrors, kung-fu flicks and sci-fi films of all eras. Monty Python and Doctor Who are two British institutions that changed his life for the better. Or so he thinks.
