Daryl doesn't feature in the comics, therefore Rick has a range of different right-hand men throughout the apocalypse. After losing the prison, Rick and Abraham co-lead the group to Washington while butting heads until they eventually learn to respect each other as leaders. This was always really interesting to read as both characters made fair decisions while also taking things too far, but we only see glimpses of this in the show.

It's a shame, because Michael Cudlitz is absolutely fantastic in the role. His survivability seemed to improve though, as Abraham's comic death was given to Denise and Robert Kirkman started to admit he regretted killing of the character before the rebellion against Negan began. It seemed likely that the TV show would give Abraham a chance in the spotlight in the soon-to-arrive conflict. This would've been really fantastic to see, seeing as Abraham actually has military experience and could've turned the tide.

This didn't come to fruition though, as he was killed by Negan to subvert the expectation that it would be Glenn that dies in the infamous baseball bat scene. But then Glenn did receive the Lucille treatment anyway. While having Negan killing two of Rick's group was a good way to add an extra punch, having it be Abraham just seems like such a missed opportunity. Being good friends with Glenn, Abraham would've likely butted heads with Rick once more when Rick first refused to fight and it would've been really interesting to see how Abe would've stepped up.
