9. The Wire

A sprawling five season epic set in Baltimore, Maryland, Treme creator David Simon's iconic HBO series The Wire may not have received much attention upon release but in the years since its last episode aired the crime drama has become a phenomenon.

And deservedly so, as the show which introduced viewers to the likes of Idris Elba and Michael K Williams managed the extraordinary feat of illustrating the intersections between criminals, cops, corrupt politicians, and the press with grace and finesse.

Portraying its entire massive cast as complex, multi-faceted characters, the show's ever-wavering moral compass could not have been further from the "good cops vs bad criminals" simplicity of Law and Order and its ilk.

As a result of this huge scope however, as well as the accurate portrayal of complicated in-group lingo from both criminals and cops alike, the show required a veritable glossary for the uninitiated and even viewers who understand the constant slang are likely to have trouble keeping up with the huge cast's diverging storylines.
