The return of the Mondasian Cybermen in the Series 10 finale was no secret. But going in to the series, fans started to wonder whether we might be seeing them much earlier than expected.

Another heavily-promoted Series 10 foe was the Monks. Given their corpse-like appearance, many Whovians speculated that they were in fact Cybermen (or strictly speaking, Mondasians), in their natural, pre-converted form.

The theory went that the Monks were what the Mondasian Cybermen looked like underneath the bandages, with the Monk Trilogy acting as an origin story for the Cybermen, depicting the events that led to the first Mondasians being converted.

Of course, in the end, none of this came to pass. Though interestingly enough, Cybermen co-creator Kit Pedler did originally envisage the creatures as religiously-motivated “star monks”.

This theory was so cool that it resurfaced three years later, when viewers of Spyfall Part 1 convinced themselves that the Kasaavin were Cybermen trying to break into our universe, similar to the "ghosts" in Army of Ghosts.

Once again, this prediction proved incorrect, though the same series' Ashad – a partially-converted cyber zealot – wasn’t a million miles away from the Cyber-Monk idea.
