10 Crazy Doctor Who Theories Fans Actually Believed
8. Missy Is In The Day Of The Doctor
If you thought there would only be one entry on this list involving the Master and a mysterious hand, think again.
Towards the end of The Day of the Doctor, the Tenth, Eleventh and War Doctors burst out of a painting and into the Black Archive, just in time to stop UNIT and the Zygons from blowing each other to hell.
They’re followed by Clara, who – in much less epic fashion – simply appears from the other side of the picture frame.
It’s a slightly awkward shot, with the angle of Clara’s hand in relation to her body completely off. Indeed, if you look at it for too long, you might begin to suspect that the hand belongs to someone else entirely, which is exactly what fans started to believe after the following year's Dark Water/Death in Heaven revealed Missy as the new incarnation of the Master.
Did this hand actually belong to Missy? Had we unwittingly been witnessing the moment of the Master's escape from Gallifrey? Well, no.
In-universe, the timelines certainly add up. But behind-the-scenes, Missy hadn’t even been conceived of at this point. All we're looking at here is Jenna Coleman's hand, which has been shot in such a way that she looks like a professional contortionist.
