Season 2 | Episode 2 Man searches endlessly for the right woman. Woman rejects him. That's Louie and dating. On and on the cycle goes as the two sexes play out a pointless charade, where Louie gets sweaty and nervous and the girl he's dating becomes increasingly bored/ irritated. But what if he broke the cycle? What if, just for one day, he was relaxed, serious, reflective and attractive? Well it does happen, just one time. As Louie walks to meet his date (who coincidentally is only cooperating because she needs his help to get into the TV business), a man charges at him in the street. Louie dodges and the man fall into the road, getting killed by a truck in the process. As his comically fake head rolls down the street the shaken Louie is a new man: calm, philosophical, alluring. Why Could It Only Happen On Louie? For so many reasons, but mostly the techniques used that would never appear anywhere else. The best bit about the scene is Louie's reaction to what he sees: the close-up, zoomed-in, baffled look on his face, the strings in the background reminiscent of a Hitchcock movie - it's a brilliant pastiche. The fact it happens right in the middle of a normal New York day seems a lot about the city itself. Basically, it's not just a funny, crazy moment, it's a brilliantly made piece of television also. That Louie can only be attractive under such horrific circumstances, and actually wins the girl, only to lose her after he admits to carrying on their date after witnessing a decapitation first hand is very funny. Turns out women do like intense men, but maybe not at such high cost.
