10 Criminally Underappreciated Classic Cartoons

5. Thundarr The Barbarian

We could spend a lot of time talking about the different cartoon adaptions of other popular media that have sprouted up over the years, but what about cartoons that branched out themselves? It's typically a shorter list of successes, potentially because some of the best options have gone largely unknown.

Take "Thundarr The Barbarian" as a prime example. Thundarr is one-half Conan The Barbarian, the other half Flash Gordon, making it 100 percent awesome. It's the story of a jacked, laser sword wielding barbarian who traverses a post-apocalyptic Earth with a sorceress and an almost wookie-esque sidekick fighting evil wizards, mutants, and cosmic villains.

While gaining something of a cult appreciation over the years, it's a show that never really got enough credit for its inventive premise. It has the kind of plot that seems ready made for the big screen, especially with the amount of imaginative backstory that was packed in its two short seasons alone.

Unfortunately, it never even made it back onto TV with a full-fledged revival though. A show as unique as "Thundarr The Barbarian" deserves more, especially when you realize that comic book legend Jack Kirby had a hand in its design.
