10 Criminally Underappreciated Classic Cartoons

6. Street Fighter: The Animated Series

Another video game cartoon that was actually enjoyable was the mid-nineties adaption of Street Fighter.

The show revolves around Guile, much like the Jean-Claude Van Damme led movie. This time, however, Guile leads a secret task force called "Street Fighters" that goes around the world stopping M. Bison's nefarious plots. In other words, its G.I. Joe versus Cobra, albeit with a few added touches.

Guile, Chun-Li, and Blanka all receive a tremendous amount of characterization from the start, with each having the kind of fleshed out background you don't normally see in shows of this genre.

While in-depth backstories alone aren't enough to carry a show, the series comes at those plots with the sort of unintentionally hilarious stoic and dramatic attitude that made the movie it takes much of its inspiration from such a delight to watch. In fact, it's hard to see why fans of the movie would hate the cartoon when they both tread a lot of similar ground with the same tone. Bison, for example, almost always comes across in his, "But for me, it was Tuesday," tone from the film which makes him a perfect cartoon villain.

All in all, that's not to say the show didn't have its warts, Charlie Nash is still morphed into Blanka for starters, just that if you come into it with a light-hearted attitude and reasonable expectations, you might find it a thoroughly entertaining watch.
