3. Mad Men
A show set at an advertising agency in New York City may not be top of everyone's To Watch list but Mad Men has become one of the greatest current dramas on television. Set in 1960s New York, Mad Men focuses on Don Draper, the creative director of Sterling Cooper, an advertising agency, his relationships and the issues that these cause him, both in his work and private life. Jon Hamm has been nominated for numerous accolades for his portrayal as Don Draper in the show, but what really stands out are the female leads. Peggy Olson, played by Elisabeth Moss, is a plain girl when she joins Sterling Cooper & Partners but when account executive, Pete Campbell puts Peggy in the family way, so to speak, things change around the office. The show has been critically acclaimed for its loyalty to the 1960s, in terms of costume design and historical accuracy and this is what has captured the hearts of its viewers. But what really keeps the fans interested is the portrayal of attitudes at the time, especially with younger viewers of the show who may have had no contact with the 1960s. Although the show isn't full of plot twists or mysteries, it has a sense of realism that is often not part of hit television dramas making it compelling to watch in an era where many shows concentrate more on shock tactics than reality.
