10 Damaging Life-Lessons The Simpsons Taught Us

5. If You're Unique And Intelligent, Just Give It Up

Homer€™s blissful ignorance is well-known, and sometimes a person cannot be blamed for being wired a little differently. But when a person goes out of their way to ensure ignorance - especially at a risk to their health - then you have a deeply disturbing lesson. In €œHomr€ we learn that the cause of Homer€™s stupidity is a crayon lodged in his brain (as a child he shoved them up his nose, naturally) and when he has it removed he suddenly becomes a genius... because science! Though he bonds with Lisa on an intellectual level, he fails to find acceptance everywhere else. It€™s hard being a genius in a town full of idiots. Desperately unhappy Homer asks Moe to put the crayon back in his brain and thus Homer is back to his old self. He confesses to Lisa that he chose the cowards way out to find happiness and although we can all understand wanting to be happy, it is extremely disconcerting to see Homer endanger himself by choosing a childlike state of mind.
