Set in the fictional northern town of Royston Vasey, The League of Gentlemen is a nightmarish spectacle that must be seen to be believed. Sitting very firmly in the grotesque section of comedy, the show lets us into the lives of the psychopaths and weirdos that inhabit its world. It's definitely not one to watch if you're easily offended and truly sinks to the depths of dark comedy to provide an experience that's as disturbing as it is funny. The most well known characters are Edward and Tubbs, the deranged local shop owners who despise anyone who isn't 'local' and aren't above resorting to murder if need be. There's also Papa Lazarou, a circus ringmaster in blackface who calls everyone 'Dave' and steals people's wives. While they're weird enough that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the unhinged characters of Royston Vasey. Created by Jeremy Dyson, Mark Gatiss, Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith the show received universal acclaim. It began as a radio show before broadcasting as three television series and a feature film. If you're in the mood to be delighted and horrified in equal measure, you're going to have to give this a watch.
