5. Buffy Kills Ted (Season 2, Episode 11)
The eleventh episode of Season 2 is a strange one. Joyce gets a new boyfriend, but Buffy soon realises there’s more to Ted than meets the eye.
As the story evolves, the two of them loath each other more and more, and their mutual hatred accumulates with a violent scuffle in the Summers’ household. Following a particularly powerful kick from Buffy, Ted tumbles down the staircase.
The next few scenes grapple with the fallout of Buffy’s actions. She has to deal with the police investigation, her mother’s shock, the reaction of her classmates, and her own guilt at having murdered a human being.
Luckily for her, Ted is actually a robot. He comes back at the end of the episode for revenge, and the Slayer takes him down for good. Yet when you watch this episode for the first time, the middle section is deeply unsettling. You really feel Buffy’s guilt and fear ripple through the story as she tries (and fails) to come to terms with what she’s done.
