The character of Bojack has had an awful existence, and it seems that he inherited this from his mother. She, in turn, inherited it from hers and so on and so on. There is this concept in the show that in a way you inherent the depression that your parents place down on you, but ultimately it tries to teach you that you cannot justify perpetuating this behaviour.

Bojack is a dangerous presence for people as he causes them pain and suffering. There often seems to be this stigma that he is justified in behaving this way because of the awful parenting skills he was raised with. However, in the end, the show makes it clear that just because he had a traumatic upbringing doesn't give him an excuse to hurt those around him.

Bojack's mother had an awful childhood as well that much is abundantly clear. But you cannot forgive the dreadful things she passes down to her child simply because the same things happened to her.

The show teaches you the harsh reality that you don't have any excuse to be a bad person. Unfortunately, some people are put in a position where being good is more challenging, but you cannot rely on your past to justify your continuation of toxicity.
