10 Disturbing Backstories Behind Your Favourite TV Characters

3. John Locke - Lost

Peter Bishop Fringe
ABC

When Lost first started, it was clear that John Locke was a character who would captivate the audience's attention. He was easily one of the most interesting characters on the show, and like pretty much everyone else on Lost, he had a tumultuous backstory that was slowly revealed as the series progressed.

John was able to miraculously walk on the island, but as his flashbacks showed, he was paralyzed when he boarded Oceanic Flight 815. The way he was paralyzed was horrible for several reasons. Locke grew up in foster care, but later in life, he and his father met.

Instead of a loving and caring relationship, his dad conned him into giving up a kidney under false pretenses. He then torpedoed his relationship with his girlfriend and pushed him out a window. That event is what resulted in his back breaking, which is how he ended up in a wheelchair.

It was this event that set his eventual landing on the island in motion. He spent four years dealing with what happened to him before deciding to go on an Australian Walkabout. This eventually brought him aboard Oceanic Flight 815, leading to his (mis)adventures on the island.
