10 Disturbing Backstories Behind Your Favourite TV Characters

2. Sam & Dean Winchester - Supernatural

The CW

There aren't many characters whose upbringing was as horrific as that of Sam and Dean Winchester. When they were kids, their mother was killed by a yellow-eyed demon in what had to be the most traumatic thing any kid should never have to see, and that event burned into their memories.

When that happened, their father decided to take up demon-hunting, but it wasn't a hobby he spent just a little time on; he took it on full-time and left his boys for long periods of time. This effectively destroyed the boys' upbringing under normal circumstances, as monster-hunting became the name of the game.

As a result of their father's obsession, Sam and Dean spent the majority of their upbringing on the road. This left them constantly in fear of their father's safety, as well as their own. Dear old dad wasn't around much, even while on the road with the boys, so they didn't see him much.

They ended up having to mature faster than kids should at their age, but they did learn some good life lessons about fighting off werewolves, ghosts, and demons. Since it became their full-time job when they grew up (after Sam's girlfriend died the same way as their mother's), at least they could say they were prepared.
