10 Doctor Who Characters Who Can Never Die

1. The Eternals

Surprise surprise, a group of characters known as "Eternals" is immortal. They just had to rub it in our faces, didn't they? This eclectic group of cosmic gods has been around since the dawn of time (give or take a few million years), and because they've lived - and will continue to live - for such a ridiculously long time, their entire MO is to amuse themselves by using mortal beings as playthings.

And that's bad news for us frail little humans.

From Captains Wrack and Striker in the Fifth Doctor serial Enlightenment, to Light in the Seventh Doctor serial Ghost Light, we've seen a number of fascinating Eternals in the show over the years, each of them essentially looking for a way to cure their everlasting boredom. They could learn a new language, or practice playing the guitar. But nah. Annoying humanity is much more fun!

Most recently, the Thirteenth Doctor faced off against the Eternals Zellin and Rakaya in the Series 12 episode Can You Hear Me. She defeated them by sentencing them to a lifetime of imprisonment, because, like the Trickster, that's the best way to deal with this lot - lock 'em up and throw away the key!

Classic Who also introduced the Black and White Guardians - the embodiments of chaos and order, respectively - who are affiliated with the Eternals, and are also immortal. The Time Lords often act like they wear the pants in their universe, but they're basically insects compared to the Eternals' everlasting might and influence.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
