10 Doctor Who Guest Actors Who Also Played The Doctor
4. Nicholas Briggs
Before he was the voice of the Daleks, and before even his work with Big Finish, Nicholas Briggs was the Doctor! He played the character over four series of fan-made audios between 1985 and 1993. Briggs' version of the Doctor was so much part of the fabric of Doctor Who fandom at the time that he even made appearances in the Doctor Who Magazine comic strip.
Dressed as a 1920s gentleman, the Briggs Doctor had an obsession with tea and classical literature, which are exactly what people thought Doctor Who was at that point. The Nth Doctor, as he's sometimes known, first appeared in the pages of DWM in a comic strip called Party Animals. It's hinted that he's a future incarnation of the Seventh Doctor when they meet at an intergalactic birthday party.
However, Briggs' Doctor would become an even larger part of Doctor Who canon when, in 1998, the comic strip appeared to kill off Paul McGann's 8th Doctor in a story entitled The Final Chapter. After being mortally wounded in defeating a cabal of Gallifreyan zealots, the Doctor regenerates...into Nicholas Briggs! There were a lot of angry letters to the magazine, but all was revealed in the following story Wormwood. It was one of the great Doctor Who comic strip arcs of the 1990s.
