10 Doctor Who Moments You're Missing From Expanded Media

3. The War Master

Doctor Who John Hurt
Big Finish

Series 3 of New Who is notable for the return of the Master during the three-part finale, where for the majority of screen time he is portrayed by John Simm. But when the Master first returns to New Who in the opening story, Utopia, he is portrayed by Sir Derek Jacobi. For the majority of the episode, Jacobi acts as Professor Yana, the guise used to hide the Master under the Chameleon Arch. But when the Arch is opened, the Master is restored, giving us the Jacobi Master for the closing glorious minutes before he regenerates into Simm.

But once again, good old Big Finish step in to flesh out this marvellous character. In 2017, Jacobi returned to the role on audio to portray the Doctor's arch nemesis in his own series: the War Master.

The series has currently ran for five series, with a sixth on the way, and the character having popped up in several other of the company's audio ranges, including being present in multiple multi-Master stories, and having faced off with the Eighth Doctor once or twice. This entry does not have one specific moment to highlight that you're missing, but rather the character as a whole.

It would be strongly argued by many a Big Finish fan that the War Master is the most evil incarnation of the Time Lord. Jacobi capitalises on the characters signature charm and wit, but also takes the role to some of its most darkest places, of course largely down to the thespian's wonderful voice and acting talent. The audio series has seen the War Master thriving during the Time War, fighting Daleks, scheming to defeat the Doctor and even re-writing time to become the creator of the Daleks. If you loved those few minutes Utopia, get yourself into his Big Finish series now!
