10 Doctor Who Rumours That Were Actually True

8. Flying Daleks!

Doctor Who flying Daleks rumour
BBC

Rumours were flying left, right, and centre in the build-up to Doctor Who's 2005 return, most of them revolving around the actor who would be cast as the Ninth Doctor. If you believed the papers at the time, then it was almost guaranteed that Bill Nighy would be taking on the role. Good times.

According to those same papers, something else that was also flying left, right, and centre were the Daleks, with the Doctor's greatest foes rumoured to be getting an airborne upgrade in Christopher Eccleston's debut series.

Outlets like the Daily Mirror claimed that "a BBC insider" had informed them that the new Daleks would be kitted out with jet-powered thrusters, giving them an aerial advantage, and allowing them to finally conquer those pesky stairs.

Putting aside the fact that the Daleks had already levitated in the classic series, it turned out that these rumours were bang on the money, with the Series 1 episode Dalek portraying the titular monster as an unstoppable killing machine with a penchant for vertical movement. And in general, the Daleks throughout NuWho are way more mobile than their classic counterparts, zooming through the sky rather than being restricted to the floor.

"It's over Doctor! We have the high ground!"

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
