When Doctor Who's TV run came to an end in 1989, nobody could be sure what the future of the show would be. Would it ever return to the small screen again? Or would expanded media stories have to fill the void? With the recent sting of cancellation, it was hard to feel optimistic - but in 1993, a glimmer of hope emerged.

That was because of some exciting news: the show was set to return to TV at the end of the year. And even better, this 90-minute special was rumoured to include all of the surviving Doctors (at the time), from Jon Pertwee to Sylvester McCoy.

According to the Daily Telegraph, availability requests had been sent to the actors, and while the script hadn't been written at that point, it was hoped that they'd all sign the dotted line - and eventually, that's exactly what they did.

The rumours were true, and the resulting episode was the charity special Dimensions In Time, which did indeed feature all the surviving classic Doctors. Still... it was hardly the grand return that Who fans had hoped for.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
