10 Doctor Who Villains Who Ultimately Turned Good

Luke Rattigan is one of the most easy-to-hate villains we've ever had in Doctor Who.

A spoiled rich-kid who thought that his genius made him "better" than everyone else, Rattigan - who was rude, unlikeable, and generally a bit of a douche - allied himself with the Sontarans in a Series 4 two-part story, helping them poison the Earth.

The frustrating thing about Rattigan is that his unparalleled intellect could've been used as a major force for good if his heart was in the right place, so it was quite satisfying when - at the end of the second episode - his cleverness saved the day.

Reprogramming a teleporter to give him access to the Sontaran ship, Rattigan stared the potato-esque soldiers right in the face and triggered a massive explosion, sacrificing himself in order to defeat the Sontarans and save the Doctor's life.

Rattigan made many mistakes in his short life - such as nearly killing millions of innocent humans - but his final act was truly selfless. Sontar-ha!

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
