5. Bolians - Background Fillers
Bolians are only trotted out when the Federation's diversity needs to be established. For instance, in the two-parter, Times Arrow, during Counselor Troi's explanation of the 21st century to Mark Twain, guess who walked past just as she was discussing diversity - a Bolian on his way to the turbolift. Then there is Mot, the barber who appeared for two episodes on TNG. A Bolian was also featured as a part of the Cassidy Yates crew and a minor (very minor) member of Captain Janeway's crew. Bottom Line: Bolians are a cheap way to show Federation diversity, you only have to paint an actor blue.
