Theon Greyjoy had a complicated upbringing and as a result, struggled greatly with his own identity. Torn between his biological family in the Iron Islands who he hadn't seen since he was a child and his adoptive wardens the Starks, Theon never found a sense of belonging with either side.

After Robb Stark is named King in the North and marches south to face a war with the Lannisters, Theon suggests he travel to the Iron Islands to enlist the aid of his family.

After arriving, he is met by the cold reaction of his father Balon who chastises him for being subservient to the Starks. He reveals his plan to pillage and raid the coast of the North and offers Theon the chance to join him or retreat back to his new family.

Theon's choice is not an easy one but instead of siding with the family that raised him and treated him well, he chooses the Greyjoys, setting in motion a series of events that did nothing but hurt good people.

The youngest Stark children had to flee Winterfell, Robb was betrayed by Theon and Theon faced the incomparable torture at the hands of Ramsay Snow. As Theon once said, he had a choice, and he chose wrong.
