10 Dumbest Things In Doctor Who: The Movie

1. It Had No Idea What It Was

Despite only having one Master in it, the Doctor Who TV Movie tried to serve too many of them.

As mentioned earlier, it was stuffed with new characters like Grace and Chang Lee. It also presented the Doctor in a very different way, more of a dashing action hero that the producers thought American viewers would like.

Conversely, there was also the Master, a villain who had been part of the show's canon since 1971. The main plot also revolved around The Eye of Harmony, another leftover from the '70s that has been an on-and-off part of Doctor Who ever since.

The film couldn't decide who its target audience was. Was it new fans or old ones? People who'd seen Doctor Who before? Or those who hadn't even heard of it? This was always going to be a tricky balance to get right, but the film failed at this, and it failed hard.

Contemporary criticism is levelled at how inaccessible the movie is to new fans. It made far too many references to its own mythology for new viewers to understand, which completely goes against the reason why it was made in the first place.

Thank goodness for Russell T Davies, eh?
