Note: it wasn't that precious...

The writers' meeting for this one must have been a doozy, or perhaps they had 25 scripts and needed a 26th, but Precious Cargo is one of those fine examples of Star Trek trying to do dramedy and ticking every box en route. Perhaps the dumbest thing here is the direct link to TNG's The Perfect Mate, with Kaitaama from the same planet as Kamala, and retreading some very familiar water. This is a bit of a recurring theme, as Precious Cargo isn't the only offender in this category, but it does mark a serious issue with Enterprise as a whole. It also uses the tired trope of sticking Kaitaama and Trip together in a small space to try and build some form of relationship in much the same vein as Trip and Malcolm in Shuttlepod One.

There's less drinking and more arguing in the hope that viewers would find it a more interesting way to build a relationship, but it falls totally flat.

Brannon Braga attempted to mould it into a "screwball comedy"; however, the attempts at laughs fall way short, and it's the wrong time and setting to drop this kind of episodic bomb into the mix. It dumbs down Trip and also degrades the impact of The Perfect Mate.

It also proved categorically that Star Trek is not the place to attempt It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World or anything akin to the Marx Brothers.

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
