10 Epic Anime Fights Where The Villain Takes Zero Damage

5. Zoro Vs Mihawk - One Piece

Madara Naruto Shippuden
Toei Animation

The first time One Piece shocked its readers with how much larger its world was outside of the East Blue was when it had Zoro go up against the current holder of his goal of world's greatest swordsman: Dracule "Hawkeye" Mihawk.

Obviously, things do not go well for our boy Zoro. Mind you, Mihawk doesn't whip out his massive cross-shaped sword until the very end, since he rightly feels that would be overkill. Instead, we see our favorite badass swordsman fail to so much as nick the bastard while he's using a pocket knife the size of a thumb.

The fight also shows how this failure is shaking Zoro to the core. He promised his friend before she died that he would become the world's greatest swordsman. And while this fight only bolsters that determination in the end, you can literally see the doubt creep in on his face as Mihawk dances around his every attack. Will he actually ever stand a chance against this monster of a man? If so, how long will that take, and will he even live to see it? Is his whole life's goal a fool's errand?

Regardless of his shaken faith in himself, Zoro's bottomless sense of honor does manage to impress Mihawk enough that he doesn't kill him. No, he just carves open his chest with his gigantic cross sword as a gesture of respect. How generous.

After seeing that Zoro gets medical attention, and being pleased with his oath to Luffy to never lose again, Mihawk challenges Zoro to find him again at the end of the Grand Line, and face him there. And just like that, Roronoa Zoro's path is laid out.
