Sasuke's primary character trait, from the beginning, has been "hates his older brother". Which, ya know, is fair considering that Itachi killed literally EVERYONE in his family. So you spend a few hundred episodes hearing Sasuke go on and on about how much he hates his brother, so only natural that the show pulls the trigger.

It uh, it doesn't go well for Sasuke.

Kid doesn't even get a single hit in on the bastard, with Itachi easily subduing him and choking him against the wall, mocking him for how utterly pathetic and weak he is. The defeat stays with Sasuke long afterwards, driving him to make worse and worse decisions as his hatred for his brother proceeds to completely consume him.
