True crime docu-series are so big now they're being parodied, and Making A Murderer is not only the one that (alongside podcast Serial) really helped kickstart the trend, but also remains a prime example of the form.

Although you can tell with some of the production values that it was made long before Netflix came onboard, the actual content itself is gripping, controversial, and something everyone is going to form their own opinion on.

It does follow - or help form - a lot of typical genre tropes, but here it makes for an exciting series where you're desperate to find out what comes next and are never disappointed, and what sets it apart from many others is that there are people genuinely worth caring about and investing your time in here, unlike, say, Netflix's latest true crime series Evil Genius.
