10 Essential TV Gay Couples For LGBT+ Pride Month

7. Robert and Aaron - Emmerdale

Tara And Willow Buffy

Aaron Livesy's coming-out story was a game-changer for British soap Emmerdale - a show that was already no stranger to tackling cutting-edge storylines. Being part of the notoriously 'manly' Dingle family, there was a time when the character hated everything about who he was. However, he would spend years coming to terms with it, before he found love again in the most unlikely of places.

A few one-night stands with Robert Sugden (and a lot of drama) later, and Aaron soon realised that he had fallen for him, and despite his best efforts to avoid the situation, Robert began to feel the same way.

The most striking thing about Robert and Aaron's relationship was that, even in the midst of the soap's more sensational storylines, it remained incredibly grounded. They both made mistakes, they fell out and they broke up, but in spite of that, they always had each other's backs and, more importantly, they found their way back to each other.

Loving each other allowed them to overcome their demons, confront their pasts and ultimately accept themselves for who they were, so it was only fitting that they capped off their wonderful love story by getting married.

While Emmerdale had explored same-sex couples in the past, Robert and Aaron's story was a significant step forward for it (and British television in general), introducing LGBT love to a whole new audience, while also gaining a whole new audience for itself as 'Robron' would attract international attention - and when you look back at their story so far, it's really no surprise that they did.
