10 Essential TV Gay Couples For LGBT+ Pride Month

5. Alex and Maggie - Supergirl

Alex Danvers' coming out storyline on Supergirl was nothing short of groundbreaking.

The Girl of Steel's badass sister was one of the show's most confident and self-assured characters, so when she began questioning her own sexuality, it resulted in a surprisingly authentic journey of self-discovery that eventually led to her finding happiness with NCPD officer Maggie Sawyer.

Though the Arrowverse had seen a number of same-sex kisses before this, Alex and Maggie (or 'Sanvers' as they were affectionately dubbed by fans) became its first major same-sex couple. That in itself was something to celebrate because, while The CW is known for daring to defy, it was extra special to see this loving couple on a superhero show simply because it introduced same-sex love to a whole new audience.

The chemistry between actors Chyler Leigh and Floriana Lima was evident throughout the pair's whole relationship, as Alex and Maggie never failed to highlight their affection for each other, so it shouldn't come as a surprise to learn that, at one point in time, Sanvers was considered the show's core couple.

"I didn't know I had it in me to be happy... or to be accepting of myself. I never would have gotten here without you." Alex told Maggie as they broke up... and that, in a way, sums up this wonderful relationship. Sanvers opened eyes and, in doing so, it opened hearts.
