Right from her very first scene in the opening season of Game of Thrones, Daenerys Targaryen was supposed to be everyone's favourite dragon queen and the rightful heir to the Iron Throne. Her growth from shy and timid young lady stuck in the shadow of her family, to the all conquering Breaker of Chains was one of the few forces of good in the Westeros world.

However it was clear that as the seasons wore on and the ending drew closer, a natural and satisfying arc for Dany was definitely not on the cards for the fans. She was suddenly shoehorned in as a potential tyrant in the making, and one man in particular would pay the price for this arc spiralling out of control: Varys, the Spider.

Portrayed throughout the years as the most crafty character on the show, as well as one of Dany's most trusted advisors, his realisation that his queen was going 'insane' and that Jon Snow would make for a better ruler came out of nowhere. It was also handled in a manner that felt so unnatural for someone fans knew so much about.

Actor Conleth Hill's reaction to his character's death was pretty much the personification of every fan, but it was Daenerys who really bore the brunt of their criticism going forward. Varys' execution marked the moment Daenerys switched from one of the few characters with a conscience, to suddenly the biggest villain in all of Westeros.

What made things even worse for fans was the fact that this whole arc for Daenerys wasn't even something they could appreciate either, she was unlikeable for all the wrong reasons.
