10 Fan Theories That Put Interesting Spins On Your Favourite '80s Cartoons

1. The Smurfs Were White Supremacists

Although the Smurfs were created as a concept in the 1950s, their totally Smurfin' cartoon was actually first aired in the 1980s. It was, of course, all sweetness and light - or so it seemed, until you realised they were totally Smurfin' racist.

Well, that's according to one fan theory, anyway. Apparently, the Smurfs are a veiled parable about the heinous concept of white supremacy.

So let's look at the evidence. They wear white pointy hats, the Smurf leader wears a pointed red hat, when they fall sick they turn black and suffer an extreme loss of intelligence and Gargamel (the villain) is a money-loving schemer with a large nose (all negative and offensive stereotypes of Jewish people).

It's said these small but rather obvious snippets from the show possibly indicate racism and Nazi idealism.
