University brings such disparate personalities, from all over the country, into one place. Channel 4 dramady Fresh Meat plays on this idea, gelling Welsh dentistry enthusiasts with pretentious Essex songwriters, and making loveable posho Jack Whitehall the leader of a band of outsiders. There's perhaps though, no greater example of the personality conflicts in Fresh Meat, than the very first scene. The effortlessly cool Vod rocks up at the house, assuming that she's the first one there. Upon walking into the living room though, she finds Howard, a twenty-something man in a bad jumper and large glasses, blow-drying Peking ducks that are hanging from the ceiling. Most shockingly for her, he's completely naked other than the jumper. He claims it's been a long time since he's actually spoken to another human being, and Zawe Ashton's reaction is fantastic; the confusion she portrays is hilarious, even without actually saying anything to the dumbstruck Howard. This pair of characters would become the two that most fans would love the most; it's a priceless first encounter, one that establishes personalities straight away, and one that confuses us just as much as Vod. It's perhaps fitting that the first series should end with a similar image; this time, Howard blow-drying with his pants on.
