10 Fascinating Facts About Seinfeld
4. An Episode Was Scrapped For Being Too Dark
The show had a knack for always being able to find the humour within unfunny topics such as masturbation, stalking, and waiting for restaurants. But they drew the line at guns.
An episode called The Bet was written for the show’s second season but never filmed due to its storyline in which Elaine buys a gun. Both the actors and crew expressed discomfort about the episode during the initial table reading and rehearsals. A particular concern was a scene in which Elaine points her new gun at herself and alludes that she’ll shoot herself in the head like “Kennedy.”
It was ultimately decided that the episode was too dark and unfunny to go ahead and it was cancelled. Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld quickly wrote a replacement episode which was the funny and gun-less The Phone Message.
This isn’t the only time the show brushed with something scary and potentially violent, as you’ll see next.
