Marge Be Not Proud topped the list of Simpsons Christmas Specials, but has to settle for third place here.
In the episode, Bart steals a video game cartridge (yep, cartridge) then has to deal with the guilt of it. Coupled with that is Marge’s disappointment, which only makes the guilt worse as instead of punishing him, he treats him like more of a grown up and less of a ‘special little guy’. Guilt trips on Christmas might not sound like the funniest premise, but come on. It’s Golden Era Simpsons. It’s all in the way they tell ‘em.
Seeing Bart fail at putting his marshmallow in his hot cocoa and needing to eat the whole thing in this slices is hilarious. Having to make his snowman for the snow family with the weird grey snow under the car is great too.
What’s best about this episode is they don’t go over the top with the morals, and so it feels much more real. This is The Simpsons at Christmas, more than any other episode they’ve done. Lisa and Homer have to play second fiddle, but dedicating the time to Marge and Bart works wonders.
