10 Futurama Episodes Probably Made Out Of Spite

8. A Farewell To Arms (S7E2)

While Fry loses his trousers, the Professor is up to his usual antics trying to gather data on a bizarre number of natural disasters that have been affecting Earth. The balloon captures some dooming information and discovers that a solar flare is about to erupt from the Sun's surface and destroy the planet.

While searching for Fry’s trousers, the gang stumble upon an ancient Mayan pyramid with a calendar that Amy translates. The translation reveals that the end of the world will happen in 3012, the year that the episode is set in.

The episode is loosely based on the Mayan prediction that the world was going to end in 2012. The creators clearly had fun parodying this one and they also poked fun at the 2009 disaster movie “2012.” Groening used his animation series to point out the absurdities of believing in an ancient prophecy as well as call out the movie industry for using fear to attract an audience. Many people were scared in 2012 and Futurama simply made light of the situation in an attempt to keep the peace.
