On very rare occasions, a companion will find themselves without their Doctor, forcing them to try and save the day without the backing of a rather useful Time Lord.

This is the position Clara Oswald found herself in during Series 8's Flatline, with the Twelfth Doctor being trapped inside a teeny-tiny TARDIS. Racing to try and put things right, Clara had to contend with freaky, dimension-meddling villains called the Boneless, but thanks to an ingenious plan of action, she managed to trick her enemies into using their own powers to restore the TARDIS to a normal size.

The Boneless were capable of transforming two-dimensional objects into three dimensions, and so, when they saw a completely flat door, they zapped it. But unfortunately for them though, this door was a fake: Clara had got her friend Rigsy to spray paint it onto the back of a poster, and then, she hung that poster in place, creating a massive piece of bait for the Boneless.

Instead of three-dimension-ing the door, the Boneless' energy goes through the poster, through the wall and into the TARDIS - which Clara had strategically placed on the other side - restoring it to full size. The Doctor then springs into action and vanquishes the Boneless for good, but he's only able to do so thanks to Clara's clever decision to use the monster's own powers against them.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
