10 Great Characters Game Of Thrones Ruined

9. Night King

After almost ten years pondering the sinister and mysterious nature of the White Walkers, what did we get for it? Zero explanation about their origins, zero explanation about their motivations and a thoroughly unsatisfying ending to their reign of terror.

In the books there is no Night King. The White Walkers don't have a leader (that we know about). But it made sense for the show to have an omnipresent representative of evil, orchestrating all the horror our characters encounter. It was also a good idea to give Jon Snow an antagonist to play off.

We can all agree the resolution to the Night King plot line was s**t, but it didn't have to be. The writers had everything in the source material to at least give this character some background.

In the books, there's a character called "Night's King" who existed thousands of years before the main story. Legend goes he was Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. He sacrificed a bunch of babies, married a female White Walker and committed untold atrocities across the North. Eventually the Starks and the Wildlings overthrew him. But there was a possibility, Night's King had been a Stark and that his White Walker child survived.

Martin has hinted at, but not confirmed, the link between Night's King and the Night King. Conspiracy theorists will tell you the writers didn't include any of these details to save content for the planned Game of Throne prequel 'Bloodmoon'. But now that's dead in the water we'll never know.
