7. Jim Moriarty - Sherlock
He's the original super villain and as such needs to make an impact whenever he appears on screen. The man I am referring to is Sherlock Holmes' mortal nemesis, with the intellect and resources to destroy the world's greatest detective. In the BBC's modern adaptation, Sherlock, we see a very tech savvy Moriarty committing crimes purely to amuse himself and draw Holmes into his dark orbit. This wanton crime spree in broad daylight followed by a speedy 'not guilty' verdict rattles Baker Street's finest. John and Sherlock are then forced into a game of cat and mouse with the very police force they so often serve. As I mentioned earlier, it is imperative that this master criminal be performed very capably and there's no denying that Andrew Scott was the best man for the job. His unhinged portrayal of Jim Moriarty managed to produce the most gripping episodes the show has given us so far. He may not have been the doctor from the novels but this played in his favor. The modern interpretation as a 'criminal consultant' kept things fresh while staying true to his main characteristics. His obsession with Sherlock and willingness to use innocent lives as pawns in his wicked game made him a terrifying adversary. In the end, Holmes is forced to fake his own death in order to protect those that he cares for. Even in death, Moriarty was shown as a force to be reckoned with.
