The Naruto universe has given us some of the most emotionally charged, high-drama fights in the history of anime. Among all the fights Naruto had to overcome on his path to eventually becoming Hokage, his battle against Pain was perhaps the most impressive and perfectly written from a storyline perspective.

Following his defeat at the ends of Jiraiya, Naruto had been holed up in Mount Miyaboku, training to master Sage Mode. During that time, Pain had launched a devastating attack on Konohagakure, killing anyone in his path.

Just when it seemed hopeless, Naruto makes his grand return. The fight was as hard hitting and scintillating as you would expect. Naruto calls upon his full arsenal against his most difficult opponent to date, including Shadow Clones, Rasengan, and of course Sage Mode. The ending was also a stroke of genius. Instead of the usual vanquishing the bad guy, Naruto ends up connecting with Pain. This brings about a full one eighty on the part of Pain, and he proceeds to bring back all the lives he took.
