The series had a fine tradition of clever episodes that in a lesser show would be called gimmicky. We've already heard about Legends Of The Dark Knight with its different animation styles but there were also the likes of POV, which was told from the point-of-view of various members of the Gotham Police Department (beating the Gotham TV series to the punch a bit there). However, the episode where Batgirl actually - categorically - dies is one of the best of these off-kilter stories. When Batgirl falls off a roof after helping Batman battle the Scarecrow, Commissioner Gordon discovers the sad truth that she is really his daughter, Barbara. Now armed with the knowledge of Batman's true identity also, he leads the GCPD on a hunt for the Dark Knight for, in his eyes, killing his daughter. Naturally things aren't quite what they seem, but, regardless, this episode is surely the bleakest and most dramatic of the entire series.
