10 Greatest Character Introductions In Sitcom History
8. David Puddy - Seinfeld
For a show that was packed with memorable side characters, Jerry’s mechanic David Puddy remains one of the funniest. First introduced in the classic season six episode The Fusilli Jerry, Elaine starts dating Puddy, which causes problems for Jerry when he hears that Elaine’s new man has stolen a sex move that he originally shared with him.
When Jerry confronts Puddy about it, the mechanic reacts in trademark deadpan fashion. It all gets brilliantly ridiculous, especially when Puddy comes up with his own move - described by Elaine as a “big budget movie that goes nowhere”.
The entire episode ranks as one of the best of the series, with the first appearance of Puddy a major reason for that. Clearly the writers thought so too, as Patrick Warburton would reprise the role a couple of episodes later in The Face Painter before making further appearances in the final season, with his on-off relationship with Elaine providing a fresh source of humour for a show that had been on the air for almost a decade. Is he really one of the best characters in Seinfeld history? As the great man himself would say - yeah, that’s right.
