10. Lynda With A Y
A contestant in a horrific version of Big Brother aboard the Game Station in the Christopher Eccleston Series 1 finale, Lynda with a Y joins that list of characters who many wished could have become a companion. Russell T Davies had the incredible knack of making us instantly like someone and he does that here for the most horrible purpose, very much as Steven Moffat did with Osgood in Dark Water, and that's to show us that the Daleks kill people. Though the monsters then went on to kill many others, including Captain Jack Harkness (before Rose did her magic resurrection trick), it's Lynda's death that sticks in the mind. Her death is memorable because of two reasons. Firstly, she was just so nice. From worrying about whether the audience liked her to her natural 'have a go' attitude, she quickly established a bond with the Doctor and Lynda is someone fans would've happily tuned in every week to watch. The other reason is the brilliant way Davies and director Joe Ahearne dispatch her. The poor young woman sees the Dalek glide up on the other side of the space station's glass and, having just enough time to realise and accept her death, its lights blink out 'Exterminate and it's game over'. It's a clever and assured moment which places Lynda's untimely demise way above similar deaths such as Jabe, Rita and Osgood.
