9. Sliders
Look, it would be pretty hard to talk about alternate universes without mentioning Sliders. After all, the entire show is set around the concept of a group of people who "slide" in and out of different universes. Each episode has a different one, whether it's a world where the Cold World domino theory was actually legitimate, or one where Great Britain won (what would have been) the American Revolution. They just hop in a wormhole, and off they go. Despite the fact that the show took a nosedive in quality during the later years, it brought to life dozens of really interesting alternate universes. It's difficult to pick just one worthy of mention, but I would probably go with the one featured in "Just Say Yes". In this world, the Sigmund Freud discovered the potential pharmaceutical effects of lithium. As a result, he became a biochemist rather than a psychologist. Just as Freud's theories on psychology have had a massive impact on the field in our world, with some only being to be questioned recently, the alternate Freud's theories on biochemistry were equally influential in his world. Psychiatric medicine advances far more quickly than psychological theory, and the present day population in the alternative universe is heavily sedated. Everyone has a drug dispenser attached to their arm, and missed dosages can result in prosecution.
