10 Greatest Star Trek Callbacks

9. The Protostar's Kobayashi Maru Program

In the Prodigy episode Kobayashi, the crew was introduced to the Protostar's holodeck. Several of the programs they saw included references to older Trek, like skydiving on Ceti Alpha V (the planet that Khan and his crew were left on in Space Seed), a kal-if-fee gladiatorial match like the one from Amok Time, and, of course, the Kobayashi Maru test.

The Kobayashi Maru was a no-win scenario simulation designed to teach cadets discipline in the face of impossible odds. In this episode, Dal became determined to pass the test to prove himself to his friends.

The scenery morphed into a recreation of a Galaxy-class bridge and Dal ordered the computer to generate some of Starfleet's finest officers to assist him. In response, the computer created holograms of Uhura, Dr. Crusher, Odo, Spock, and Scotty. Crusher's lines were recorded by Gates McFadden (her first appearance in Trek since Star Trek: Nemesis in 2002), and all of the others were voiced using archived audio clips (some of lower quality than others).

Mcfadden slid back into the role of Crusher effortlessly in Kobayashi, and the other holograms behaved just like the characters they were based on. The holodeck scenes in this episode were just such a joy to watch, especially Spock's speech to Dal near the end.

We also need to mention the return of the Ktarian game from the Next Generation episode, The Game, which was basically the cherry on top of an episode packed with Trek callbacks.
